This easy chicken drumsticks recipe is loaded with flavor and made in the crock pot for a simple, no-fuss dinner.
Hiiiiii. How are you? How goes it? WOOHOO for the weekend! SO happy you’re here!!
Summer has definitely arrived and it is HOT up in hurr. It went from 72 degrees to 93, over night. Why does it have to be like that?! I need a happy medium. Say, 82 degrees.
82 degrees = Happiness, to me. 93 degrees = TORCHer.
I’m also preparing to host my daughter’s 4th birthday party, outside. Today. And we don’t have a pool. Which is why I’m also working on making a trash bag slip and slide as we speak.
And did I mention that using your crock pot/slow cooker thingamajig is the smartest thing during the Summer?! Yah, it is. It’s too hot to turn on the oven! Kick back, relax, and let your crock pot do all the work. Like, it can make you these Citrus-Soy Chicken Drumsticks without heating up your house. So smart.
Ugh. I slathered the most amazing concoction on these babes. They are the best thing of life. The best news? They’re not fried and you won’t miss that mess once you try them.
The sauce tho. It’s a combination of soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, and lemon juice. What’s more is that these drumsticks sit on top of orange slices while they cook. EEEEP! It’s fantastically FANtastic.
Now that I’ve said all that I had to say, I’m gonna go continue working on my slip and slide, while creating a playlist of all the 90s songs that I can find. This birthday party is going to be epic!!
ENJOY!

- 1 orange, thinly sliced
- 8 to 10 chicken drumsticks, or enough to cover the bottom of a 6-quart crock pot
- 1 tablespoon all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste
- ½ cup sweet chili sauce

- 3 cloves garlic, minced

Instructions
- Layer in the orange slices. Arrange the orange slices on the bottom of the crock pot in one layer.
- Coat the chicken. In a large plate or a mixing bowl, combine flour, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Toss the chicken in the flour mixture to coat. Add chicken to the crock pot in one single layer.
- Add the marinade. In a small mixing bowl combine sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, lemon juice, and garlic; mix well until thoroughly incorporated. Pour the prepared sauce over the chicken and brush it all around the pieces.
- Cook. Cover the crock pot and cook on low for about 4 to 5 hours, or until the chicken is cooked.
- Rest and serve. Uncover and gently stir, and then let the chicken stand for 10 minutes. Garnish with slices of green onions and sesame seeds, and serve.

Hi I am just preparing this now and I have peeled the orange as I think the peel can be a bit bitter. I will see how it turns out…..Linda
Do you use skinless drumsticks, or skin on?
This is our favorite recipe! I make it at least once a week! So delicious & the chicken is so moist & juicy!
This looks really good cant wait for my drumsticks to thaw.
What about how long to cook on high?
I’ve tried so many of these chicken dishes and I’ll say this is another that stands out, the lemon zest comes through very nicely, I my have used a heaping teaspoon but worth it, the sweet chili sauce, perfect, my compliments, and thanks.
I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed it!! Thank YOU! Happy Holidays!
never heard of sweet chili sauce, where would I find it in the grocery store? Thanks
Hi Tonya! Look for the Asian or international aisle, or you might even find it by the ketchup.
Just put everything in in crock pot .. looks so good ..one question . .can i cook on high halfway through cooking..thanks
YUM! My mother use to make this and I absolutely love it!
I’m exited to make this today! I’m going to use skinless thighs as that’s what I have on hand. I’d like to make a large batch but I noticed you mention to use enough chicken to cover the bottom of the crock. I’d like to know if you think it would turn out as good with a larger amount of chicken? I’d like to Double or triple the recipe.
Hi Debi! All recipes for slow cookers have always advised to only use one layer of chicken, enough to cover the bottom, and not to overlap it. And since I’ve always followed that, I’m going to say don’t add more than what can cover the bottom. ๐
Thank you so much for this information! I held off making it until tonight so I elm follow this advise. This recipe sounds so wonderful and healthy, I can’t wait to try it!
Do you need to peel the orange before slicing. Or put it in peel and all?
Thats what i would like to know too?!
