Crab rangoon dip has all the creamy, sweet-savory, spicy flavors of crab rangoon without the deep fryer! This easy baked crab dip combines cream cheese, crab meat, and a few simple seasonings to make the best holiday appetizer or game day snack. Just mix, dump, and bake until it’s melted and bubbly.

Ingredients You’ll Need
Here’s what you’ll need to make this easy appetizer dip. See the recipe card for the exact measurements.

- Cream Cheese – At room temperature. Use the cream cheese blocks, not the kind that comes in tubs.
- Mayonnaise and Sour Cream – You can use only mayo for a richer dip, or only sour cream for a lighter option. Greek yogurt also makes a good substitute for either, if needed.
- Crab Meat – My favorite type of crab meat for dips is lump crab. Drain it well and pick out any cartilage before making the dip. See below.
- Shredded Cheese – I like mild and melty Monterey Jack, as it doesn’t overpower the other flavors. Other good choices are cheddar, Gouda, and Havarti, or a mix of meltable cheeses.
- Green Onions – Thinly sliced. You could also use chopped chives, though you’ll need about 2-3 times the amount.
- Lime Juice – Try to use freshly squeezed lime juice. Bottled juice just doesn’t have the same flavor and brightness as fresh.
- Soy Sauce – Low-sodium soy sauce, or substitute tamari or coconut aminos if needed.
- Sweet Chili Sauce – Choose your favorite brand of Thai sweet chili sauce. You can use hot or mild, depending on how spicy you’d like your dip.
- Sriracha – Or another hot sauce, chili flakes, or cayenne pepper. Feel free to skip it if you’re sensitive to spice.
- Garlic – Fresh garlic is always my first choice. If you don’t have it, substitute ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder per clove.
- Sugar – Just a little granulated sugar helps balance the spicy, savory, umami flavors in the dip. You can also use honey, brown sugar, or agave if needed.
What Kind of Crab Should I Use?
You’ll find different grades of crab in grocery stores. I save the pricier Jumbo lump with large, whole chunks for dipping in garlic butter, but I recommend making this crab rangoon dip with any of the following:
- Lump crab meat: My crab of choice here. Lump crab is broken-up pieces of jumbo lump that still have a nice, flaky texture and good flavor. If you’re using frozen crab, make sure it’s fully thawed.
- Canned crab meat: Another affordable option that works well in crab dip recipes. Drain the canned crab as needed.
- Surimi: Also called imitation crab. Surimi is made from inexpensive white fish with a flavor and texture that mimic real crab and lobster. While I wouldn’t recommend it for recipes like crab cakes, it works well in this dip!

How to Make Crab Rangoon Dip
This crab rangoon dip is quickly becoming one of my go-to party appetizers because it’s just THAT easy to make. These are the steps.

- Make the creamy base. Grease a baking dish, then beat softened cream cheese with mayo and sour cream.
- Finish the dip. Next, stir in lime juice, soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, and sriracha sauce along with the garlic, sugar, salt, and pepper. Fold in about ¾ cup of shredded Monterey Jack cheese with the green onions and crab meat.
- Assemble. Transfer the crab rangoon dip mixture to your baking dish and sprinkle the top with the remaining shredded cheese.
- Bake. Finally, bake the dip for 20-25 minutes. It’s done when the dip bubbles at the edges and the cheese is fully melted. The main thing is not to overbake. Overbaking can cause the crab dip to separate and make it oily. When it’s time to serve, set out your warm dip with a side of crispy wonton chips, and enjoy.
Slow Cooker Option
I love using my slow cooker to make and serve hot dip recipes, like my sausage cheese dip, when we’re expecting guests. It’s also a great make-ahead option that lets the dip cook while I go about my day.
To prepare crab rangoon dip in the slow cooker, mix the ingredients as written. Instead of transferring the dip to the baking dish, add it to the crock pot or slow cooker. Top with cheese and cook on Low for 2 to 2½ hours, or until melted and bubbly. You can switch the cooker to the Keep Warm setting while serving.

Crispy Wonton Chips for Crab Rangoon Dip
Homemade wonton chips pair perfectly with this creamy crab rangoon dip! Pick up a package of refrigerated or frozen wonton wrappers from the grocery store or your local Asian supermarket. I actually like to bake the wontons first. This way, the oven is preheated and ready when it’s time to bake the dip.

- Get ready to bake. Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Cut the wonton wrappers into triangles, then arrange them on a baking sheet. Brush them with a little oil, making sure they’re in a single layer and not overlapping, so they crisp up.
- Bake. Bake the wonton chips for 5-7 minutes, until golden and crisp. They brown quickly, so keep a close eye! Once baked, remove them from the oven and set them aside while you move on to making the dip.
If you’d like, you can prepare the wonton chips 2-3 days in advance. Allow them to cool completely and store the baked chips in an airtight container at room temperature until it’s time to serve.
Tips and Variations
- Imitation vs. real crab. I like to use real lump crab for this recipe. However, you can use surimi (imitation crab) instead, and your dip will still taste great. Be sure to drain the crab well before you use it.
- For a smooth, creamy dip, soften the cream cheese. This makes it easier to blend with the other dip ingredients and avoids lumps.
- Don’t overbake the dip. Bake just until the crab rangoon dip is hot and bubbling around the edges and all the cheese is melted. Overbaking causes the dairy to separate, leading to a greasy dip.
- For more kick, add a drizzle of Thai sweet chili sauce or sriracha after baking. You can also try stirring seeded and chopped jalapeño into the dip.
- Add extra crunch. Instead of shredded cheese, top the dip with panko crumbs, crushed Ritz crackers, or crushed wonton chips before baking.
- For a high-protein version, swap the sour cream and/or mayonnaise with cottage cheese, like my cottage cheese Buffalo chicken dip.
- Swap the crab. It won’t technically be crab rangoon dip, but you can absolutely substitute the lump crab in this recipe with chopped cooked shrimp or even lobster (if you’re feeling fancy).

What to Serve With Crab Rangoon Dip
I like to arrange the golden wonton chips on a platter with a baking dish of crab rangoon dip in the middle for an easy appetizer on game day. It always disappears quickly, sometimes even before kickoff!
- Chips and dippers: Serve with wonton, pita, or tortilla chips, grissini breadsticks, toasted crostini, or carrot and celery sticks.
- More appetizers: Pair this dip with more finger foods, like bacon-wrapped chicken bites, corn ribs, and grape jelly meatballs, or use any leftover crab to make these stuffed mushrooms.
- Tiki-bar style: Keep the theme with Kahlua pork tucked into Hawaiian rolls to make sliders. Serve with a grapefruit rum cocktail or a blackberry margarita (or this festive Christmas punch during the holidays!).

Crab Rangoon Dip
Ingredients
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup sour cream
- 8 ounces lump crab meat, well-drained and picked over for cartilage
- 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese, divided
- 3 green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
- 2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons Thai sweet chili sauce
- 1 teaspoon Sriracha
- 1 small garlic clove, minced
- ½ teaspoon granulated sugar
- salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
For Serving:
- 1 package wonton wrappers, (use as many as you like)
- 1 tablespoon neutral cooking oil
- additional sliced green onions, for garnish
Instructions
Make the Wonton Chips:
- Heat your oven. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Prepare the wonton wrappers. Cut the wonton wrappers diagonally into triangles and arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Lightly brush or spray both sides with neutral oil.
- Toast. Bake the wrappers for 5–7 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp. Watch them closely because they brown quickly. Remove from the oven and let them cool while preparing the dip.
Make the Dip:
- Lower the oven temperature. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 1-quart baking dish and set aside.
- Combine. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, and sour cream until smooth.
- Add seasonings. Add the lime juice, soy sauce, Thai sweet chili sauce, Sriracha, garlic, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Assemble. Add ¾ cup of the Monterey Jack, green onions, and lump crab meat. Gently fold everything together, taking care not to break up the crab too much. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly. Sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup Monterey Jack over the top.
- Bake the dip. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until hot and bubbling around the edges and the cheese is melted. Don't overbake; crab dips can become oily, and the dairy can start to separate if you bake it too long.
- Finish and serve. Garnish with sliced green onions. Serve immediately with the crispy wonton chips.

Notes
- Add extra Thai sweet chili sauce on top of the dip after baking, if you’d like.
- For this recipe, you can use surimi instead of crab meat.
- Drain the crab meat well before use.
- Make sure the cream cheese is softened to room temperature before mixing for a smooth, creamy dip.
- Don’t overbake the dip. Bake just until hot and bubbling around the edges and the cheese is melted. Overbaking can cause the dip to become oily or separate.

Make-Ahead and Storage
- Prep it ahead. Assemble this crab rangoon dip in the baking dish up to 2 days ahead of baking. Keep it wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or covered in the fridge. Take it out ahead of time to take the chill off, or add an extra minute or two to the baking time if you’re baking it cold from the fridge.
- Refrigerate the baked dip. Keep any leftover crab rangoon dip refrigerated for up to 3 days. I don’t usually recommend freezing for dairy-based dips, as they can be grainy after thawing.
- Reheat. To maintain a creamy texture, reheat the dip under foil in a 350ºF oven until it’s hot throughout. Be careful not to overheat it.
