Refreshing Blackberry Margarita Recipe

I’ve been taking my farmer’s market fruit hauls to cocktail hour. My recent favorites are a toss-up between a mint julep and this fun twist on a margarita with blackberries!

This blackberry margarita recipe takes minutes to make by muddling sweet-tart blackberries with simple syrup. Shake that over ice with classic margarita ingredients including tequila and lime juice, and voilà. Plus, the beauty of making a margarita from scratch is that you can customize it exactly how you like it.

I made a round of these to have with my pineapple cucumber salad and a side of tortilla chips and salsa the other evening. Huge success! I think a blackberry margarita would also go well with coconut shrimp, a Tex-Mex chicken salad, or these BBQ chicken skewers.

Blackberry Margarita Ingredients

Gather the following ingredients to make this easy summer cocktail. Find the full list with measurements in the printable recipe card below.

Blackberry margarita ingredients with text labels.
  • Blackberries – Fresh blackberries are first prize, but frozen blackberries work well in this recipe. If you’re using frozen berries, thaw them first.
  • Simple Syrup – You can buy simple syrup from the store, but it’s super easy to make your own from water and granulated white sugar (see below). You can sweeten this cocktail with agave syrup, too, or blackberry syrup for a more intense flavor.
  • Tequila – You’ll find blanco, gold, and reposado tequilas in stores. My favorite for this recipe is blanco (silver) tequila, though tequila reposado offers a deeper flavor. Choose a tequila you like to drink, as its flavor will stand out in your margarita. Popular brands are Jose Cuervo, Espolon, Don Julio, and Herradura.
  • Triple Sec – Cointreau is a premium brand of triple sec. I prefer to splurge on my tequila for this recipe and reach for a mid-range bottle of triple sec in our local liquor store. I don’t recommend budget triple sec, however, unless you’re batching margaritas for a party. The flavor tends to be a bit artificial.
  • Fresh Lime Juice – Emphasis on FRESH when making a margarita! Please leave the bottled lime juice in the fridge for this recipe. Freshly squeezed limes are essential, and you’ll be able to slice them for a garnish afterward, too.
  • Sea Salt – Optional, for adding a salt rim to the glass. Regular flaked sea salt or coarse salt is classic. I like to use black salt, like lava salt or black rimming salt, for a more dramatic look. Just don’t use Kala Namak, a.k.a. Himalayan black salt, which has a pungent smell.

Making Homemade Simple Syrup

Making simple syrup from scratch is, fittingly, super simple. Just combine equal parts water and white granulated sugar in a saucepan on the stovetop. Bring the pan to a boil, then lower the heat to a simmer for 5 minutes until the sugar dissolves. Take the pan off the heat and cool it.

Once cooled, your homemade simple syrup is ready to use right away, or you can refrigerate it for up to 1 week. Use it in more cocktails, from White Claw slushies to vodka lemonade.

Non-Alcoholic Blackberry Margarita

To make a mocktail version of this blackberry margarita, I’d recommend substituting the tequila with soda water or lemon/lime soda and replacing the triple sec with orange juice. Adjust the lime juice to taste. For another alcohol-free fruit drink, check out blueberry agua fresca.

Blackberry Margarita

This blackberry margarita puts a refreshing, sweet-tart spin on the classic cocktail. Muddle fresh blackberries with simple syrup, then shake over ice with tequila, triple sec, and lime.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • ½ cup fresh blackberries
  • 1 ounce simple syrup, you could also use agave syrup or blackberry syrup
  • 4 ounces tequila blanco
  • 1.5 ounces triple sec
  • 2 ounces fresh lime juice

Additional:

  • ice cubes
  • lime slices
  • coarse sea salt or black salt, like lava salt, black rimming salt, but not Kala Namak

Instructions

  • Shake the margaritas. Add the blackberries and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker. Muddle the blackberries with a cocktail muddler until they release their juices. Add tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. Add a handful of ice, close the shaker, and shake vigorously for 20–30 seconds.
  • Prepare the glasses. Run a lime slice around the rim of each glass. Add salt to a shallow plate and coat the rims of the glasses with salt.
  • Strain and serve. Strain the margarita into ice-filled margarita glasses using a cocktail strainer. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use fresh or thawed blackberries.
  • You can use any of the recommended syrups. The blackberry syrup will give an intense blackberry flavor. You could also make homemade simple syrup by simmering equal parts water and sugar (ex: 1 cup water + 1 cup granulated sugar) until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let it cool.
  • If you do not have a muddler or shaker, just add all into a food blender, along with ice. Blend until the ice is crushed and then strain. Do not blend like you would blend a smoothie. For straining, you can use a small sieve.

How to Make a Blackberry Margarita

  • Muddle the berries. Add the fresh (or frozen and thawed) blackberries to a cocktail shaker along with the simple syrup. Use a muddler to crush the berries to release their juices into the syrup.
  • Combine. Add the tequila, triple sec, and lime juice to the shaker with a handful of ice. Seal it closed, and give that a good shake for 20-30 seconds, until the shaker feels cold to the touch.
  • Rim the glasses. Run a lime around the edge of your glass to wet it a little. Then, dip the rim of the glass into a shallow bed of salt to coat.
  • Serve. Add ice cubes to each glass. Using a cocktail strainer or small mesh sieve, strain the margarita into your prepared glass, and enjoy!

Use the Blender

If you don’t have a cocktail shaker or a muddler, you can make this blackberry margarita recipe in the blender. Add all the ingredients, including ice, to your blender. Pulse to crush the ice, then strain the drink through a fine-mesh sieve.

Don’t over-blend your cocktail, like you would a smoothie, unless you’re going for a frozen blackberry margarita. Come to think of it, maybe that’s next!
