I’m going to show you how to make the most delicious, fudgy 2-ingredient brownies with nothing more than a box of brownie mix and a can of Sprite! It’s the best shortcut when a chocolate craving hits, and you can swap Sprite for cherry cola, Dr. Pepper, or root beer.

If you’ve already tried my two-ingredient Nutella brownies and loved them, this recipe is for you!

When I’m craving homemade brownies but don’t want to drag out half the pantry, a pan of 2-ingredient chocolate brownies is my go-to move. These brownies are made from a box of brownie mix and a can of Sprite. That’s it! No eggs, no flour, no oil. And they come out chocolatey, rich, and fudgy as ever.

Make them once, and you’ll see that these are the ultimate lazy girl dessert hack, and yes, they absolutely taste like brownies!

The Magic of This Brownie Recipe, Explained

  • Two ingredients. The carbonation in the soft drink reacts with the leavening in the brownie mix, creating thick, moist brownies without the usual brownie ingredients.
  • Rich and fudgy. In spite of their minimal ingredients, these brownies are super chocolatey and full of flavor.
  • Low-effort baking. My 2-ingredient brownies are perfect for beginner bakers and those who love a good shortcut from time to time.

A Little Backstory On These 2-Ingredient Brownies

Many moons ago, my aunt owned a bakery. She made her bread and pastries from scratch, but at home, she often baked with cake mixes. One of the best baking secrets she shared with me is using carbonated drinks with a box of cake mix as a semi-homemade shortcut.

One day, when I had a box of Pillsbury Brownie Mix in the pantry, I decided to test her advice. I poured Sprite into the brownie mix, gave it a whisk, and popped it in the oven. What came out were thick, soft, springy, fudgy, delicious brownies! I knew immediately that I needed to share the recipe so everyone could get in on the magic.

The cake mix and a can of Sprite needed to make 2-ingredient brownies, with text labels over each ingredient.

Only 2 Ingredients

Does it get any better than a batch of fudgy brownies that requires only TWO ingredients? Scroll down to the recipe card for the exact measurements and recipe instructions.

  • Boxed Brownie Mix – Choose your favorite box of fudgy brownie mix from Pillsbury, Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines, Ghirardelli, or similar. I used a 10.25-ounce box for this recipe.
  • Sprite – You’ll need about ½ of a standard can. I use Sprite or another lemon lime soda for its mild flavor. However, you can experiment with different soft drinks to give your brownies a different flavor profile. Try Dr. Pepper or root beer!

Recipe Tips

  • Don’t overmix. Just whisk until the lumps in the brownie mix are gone. Overmixing can make the brownies dense.
  • Stick with a “fudgy” brownie mix. Brownie mixes labeled “fudge” or “chewy” are best for a rich, moist texture. Avoid mixes that say “cakey.”
  • Let the brownies cool completely. These 2-ingredient brownies need time to set before slicing. If you cut them too soon, they may crumble apart.
  • Use foil for easy removal. Lining the pan with foil makes it so much easier to lift the brownies out and cut them into clean squares.
  • Tweak the flavor. Mix things up and try using a flavored soda, like cherry cola.

How to Make 2-Ingredient Brownies

I know it sounds too good to be true, but I’ve made these brownies more times than I can count. They always turn out perfect! Here are the steps.

  • Prepare for baking. While the oven preheats to 350ºF, line an 8×8-inch pan with foil or parchment paper. Lightly grease the pan with cooking spray to help with sticking.
  • Mix the batter. Next, combine the brownie mix with Sprite. Whisk until the lumps have dissolved.
  • Bake. Pour the brownie batter into your prepared pan and bake for 42-45 minutes. A toothpick stuck into the center should come out clean.
  • Cool and serve. Lastly, let the brownies cool completely in the pan. Cut them into squares, and enjoy your brownies topped with whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream!

Proper Storage

  • On the counter. Once cooled, store the brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days.
  • Refrigerate. For longer storage, store the brownies covered in the fridge for up to 1 week.
  • Freeze. Wrap individual brownies in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 2 months. Thaw on the counter when a chocolate craving hits.

I have not tested this recipe with adding any fruits to it (or anything else, for that matter) so I can’t say 100% if it will work or not.
