This Grilled Pizza is the best way to make pizza at home! It’s crispy, grilled flatbread pizza layered with cream cheese, chicken, mushrooms and onions. This is the next best thing to a pizza made in a wood fired oven. The heat and hint of smoke from the grill take this grilled pizza to the next level.

EASY HOMEMADE GRILLED PIZZA

We have convinced ourselves to believe that pizza is not a good meal choice because, it’s considered “junk food.” Well, it’s junk food when you buy it from a fast food place, but homemade pizza is not junk food. AMiright?!

Really though, pizza can actually be a wonderfully balanced meal. Stay with me here. You have a thin flat bread crust, topped with fresh ingredients, such as veggies, herbs, a little bit of cheese, and your choice of protein; chicken, turkey, sausage, etc…

WHAT MAKES GRILLED PIZZA SO GOOD?

We love to grill and we love pizza, so I decided to make grilled pizza. 🙌

Since the best pizza is almost always prepared in a wood-fired hot oven, grilling pizza has to be the closest method to achieving that greatness. The grill can get pretty hot resulting in a delicious pizza that is chewy with a crispy crust, and it might be the best pizza you’ll ever have. 🍴

Besides, who wants to heat up the oven to make pizza in the middle of summer?! Now, you won’t have to. Fire up the grill!

RECIPE INGREDIENTS

Hot Tip: When grilling pizza, you need to have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go.

  • Refrigerated pizza dough – you can also use homemade pizza dough
  • Olive oil
  • Cream cheese
  • Mushrooms
  • Chicken breast, cooked and shredded
  • red onions
  • shredded Mozzarella Cheese

How to Make Grilled Pizza:

  1. The first thing we’re going to do is roll out the dough on top of a lightly floured cookie sheet, and press it down with your fingers to flatten it a bit.
  2. Then, slide the dough onto the preheated grill and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes, or until it starts to brown on the bottom.
  3. Remove pizza crust from grill; flip it over, brush grilled-side with olive oil, and spread with cream cheese.
  4. Next, layer all of the ingredients on top.
  5. Pop the pizza back onto the grill for about 3 to 4 minutes, or until cheese is melted and everything is heated through.
  6. Remove from grill; let stand couple minutes before cutting and serving.

How to Store Grilled Pizza

  • The best way to store this pizza is to stack and wrap: Place a single layer of slices on a dinner plate. Place a sheet of wax, foil or parchment paper. Then keep stacking, alternating pizza and paper, until all the pizza is on the plate. Tightly wrap the whole thing in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator. Keep in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: You can also freeze your pizza. Prepare the pizza the same way and store in the freezer for up to 2 months. To avoid freezer burn, double wrap the pizzas. You can do two layers of plastic wrap or one layer of plastic wrap and one layer of foil. Lay pizzas flat in the freezer.

Reheating Frozen Pizza

When reheating your frozen pizza it requires a method that will crisp up the crust. Thus, you want to reheat the pizza using the dry heat of a hot conventional oven to crisp the crust and melt the cheese.

Ingredients
  • 1 refrigerated pizza dough
  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 ⅓ cup part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1 small red onion, sliced
  • 4 ounces cooked/grilled chicken breast, shredded
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • Olive oil
Instructions
  1. Preheat the grill to HIGH.

  2. Prepare the dough and shape it on top of a cutting board or a flat cookie sheet.

  4. Slide the pizza dough off the baking sheet and onto the grill.
  5. Close the grill and grill the dough for about 2 to 3 minutes, or until browned on the bottom.

  7. Take the dough off the grill with a pair of tongs and put it back on top of the cookie sheet or cutting board.

  8. Turn the pizza crust over, browned-side up.
  9. Brush with a bit of olive oil, then spread the cream cheese over the entire pizza crust.

  10. Add 1 cup mozzarella cheese, red onions, shredded cooked chicken, and mushrooms.

  11. Sprinkle with remaining cheese.

  12. Put the pizza back on the grill.
  13. Turn the heat down to medium-high, and close the lid.
  14. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and melted.
  15. Pull the pizza off the grill onto a cutting board and let it rest for a minute or so before cutting and serving.

What a genius idea pizza on the grill! We did this for a family birthday party it was perfect everyone got to top off their pizza and it was easy and delicious. Thanks for the idea!

  2. Jared (Random Food Blog)

This looks so good! one question for you though; I have the same exact grill and the grates have warped so badly. Are your’s holding up and do you think it would affect the pizza? Each one is bowed up about a half inch in the middle.

    1. Kate@Diethood

Thank you for sharing this recipe with me!! I’ll definitely give this a try… sounds incredibly simple!!

  3. Marissa

Wow, I never would have thought of trying cream cheese as a pizza topping, but I can see how deliciously it must pair with the spice of a red onion. Can’t wait to try it.

Also, your photography (and that gorgeous wood table on which it happens!) is simply stunning.

  4. Lisa {AuthenticSuburbanGourmet}

Love the combination of flavors – I bet it was just divine! Enjoy your 4th of July weekend!

  5. Hester aka The Chef Doc

Oh Kate, pizza is pizza and grilled is always a great way to have it! This one looks absolutely scrumptious! R2D2 is absolutely cute!

  6. Kim - Liv Life

Kate… I’m a little bit behind, but what a great job you did!! We’ve been out of town and this was one of the first posts I’m catching up on. Gorgeous photos, as usual. Love the toppings, and well, I won’t admit it anywhere else, but I occasionally use the same dough you did!! 😉

  7. nipponnin

It looks fantastic! I must let my husband know of this recipe. He love pizza and make great pizza too. He posted it on my blog also. Congratulations on top 9!

  8. Chef Dennis

anyway you make it, homemade pizza is always the best! I have not tried grilling pizza yet or using cream cheese, both sound heavenly!
Congrats on the top 9 today!

  9. Terris@Freeeatsfood

I have been meaning to try grilling a pizza for a long time. I think that this post finally has me convinced to give it a try. It looks SO good. One of my kidlets is allergic to tomatoes so I am forever looking for alternative “sauces” for pizza. The cream cheese is genius! We will definitely give it a try.

  10. Jean (Lemons and Anchovies)

I won’t judge, not at all! I stopped making my own pizza dough when Trader Joe’s fresh pizza dough came into my life. It’s really good! You don’t even need to add water, just let rest on the counter for a half hour, roll out and it’s ready to use.

I’ve never used cream cheese on pizza but it’s a great idea. Love this pizza!

Congrats on Top 9 and hope you feel better soon!

  11. Trix

I have been meaning to grill pizza forever; this post is a sign that I must get off my duff and do it. I never thought to put cream cheese on pizza!

Oh I so wish I had a grill…and your pizza to put on that imaginary grill. I don’t think I’ve ever had a cream cheese based pizza but I think that’s about to change real soon!

  19. Jill Colonna

Kate, this must be one of the fastest and most satisfying dishes ever in the summer – LOL, bet your neighbours were sniffing out that grilled pizza after their steaks. I also saw Kim’s one and now this – I’m going to have to bring out that BBQ! This is fab.

  20. Rachel @ Baked by Rachel

Looks fantastic!! I’m too scared to grill my own pizza just yet… so far I’ve only used naan on the grill.

  23. Felice - All That's Left Are The Crumbs

Love the pizza and love the photo! I saw Kim’s post on her pizza dough too and I have it bookmarked to try. I thought it would be fun to do some individual pizzas so everyone has their favorite topping.

  24. Becky

I’ve never grilled pizza either, but I see one in my future. Your pizza looks so good, and your directions are very clear and easy. I love the chicken and red onion combo.

  25. Erin @ Dinners, Dishes and Desserts

This pizza looks amazing! I am going to grill pizza this summer, I am making it my mission! I say this everytime someone grills pizza – just wait, I will post one sometime this summer!

  26. The Mom Chef ~ Taking on Magazines One Recipe at a Time

Ok, R2D2 is an awesome grill, but geeeeez; it’s gas. Charcoal, my friend. Charcoal.

You pizza….wow. I’ve yet to try grilling one, but I see it in my near future (very near). I’m thinking of an alfredo sauce instead of cream cheese though. Hmmmm. And probably spinach instead of mushrooms since the fungus makes Hubby and Dudette gag (they have no taste).

Gorgeous pictures. Absolutely gorgeous (but then again, yours always are).

  27. Emily @ Life on Food

    1. Your grill is gigantic!
    2. Your pizzas make me regret not having a grill.
    3. Make next pizza will have cream cheese on it.
    4. I cannot wait to see your next grilling creation.

  30. Megan @ pipandebby

I have been staring at these pizza photos for about 10 minutes straight now. This is brilliant! I always say that cream cheese makes everything better, and I’m sure cream cheese makes this pizza delicious! Yum, gotta try this one to celebrate grilling season.

  31. Kimmy @ Lighter and Local

This looks so good. I’ve been craving homemade pizza all this weekend. I think I’m going to make it tomorrow and grill it! (and I don’t judge, I love TJ’s pizza dough. I buy a bunch at once and throw it in the freezer).

  32. Lindsey@Lindselicious

Aaah I want to get a grill again so badly looking at this pizza. Love the idea of adding in cream cheese. Great job Kate!
PS- everytime I look at your pics I see that behind the scenes photo you posted on FB! LOL

  33. Junia @ Mis Pensamientos

i didn’t even know betty crocker had a pizza mix! cream cheese with veggies melted on there… just looks fabulous!!

  34. Kristy

This looks delicious! I’ve never put cream cheese on a pizza. And I’ve never tried to grill a pizza. It sounds like fun. And I have to go back to the cream cheese…there wouldn’t be a slice leftover!

  35. Nami @ Just One Cookbook

This pizza looks absolutely delicious! I have to try “grilling” pizza on the outside grill, but probably I need to try making homemade pizza dough first! 😉 Beautiful pizza Kate!

  36. Janet@fromcupcakestocaviar

Sounds delicious! I love pizza and grilling and had heard of grilled pizzas but never been brave enough to try them. This looks like the one to change my mind 🙂

  37. Veronica Gantley
