Grilled Pizza Recipe

Grilled Pizza – Crispy and grilled flatbread pizza layered with cream cheese, chicken, mushrooms and onions.

grilled pizza, how to grill pizza

Homemade Grilled Pizza is the next best thing to a pizza made in a wood fired oven. Store-bought Pizza dough is topped with cream cheese, chicken, mushrooms and onions.

Last weekend I was out and about, shopping taking care of business. When I finally came home and pulled up into my driveway, as I opened the car door to get out, a big whiff of grilled food just about knocked me out.

It was beautiful! Summer is here!

Bob, the neighbor, was grilling steaks. Robert, the neighbor across the street, was grilling burgers and kebabs. And I, the only female on the block hanging out next to R2D2, was about to grill something… or just about everything that I saw in my fridge. I was hungry, I was inspired, I was ready to eat!

my grill

In case you haven’t met, this is R2D2 – my grill.

I took out some chicken, some veggies, salads… Hubs then came out and suggested I grill the pizza that I wouldn’t stop talking about.

That would be this pizza – Kim, from Liv Life, one of my absolute favorites grilled a pizza dough made with semolina flour and topped it with cheese and pepperoni. Deeeelish! But I had neither semolina flour, nor pepperoni.

I went to the next best thing. My favorite pizza dough that comes in a package,  (don’t judge, it’s delicious!) and my favorite topping – cream cheese!

grilled pizza with chicken

The best pizza is made in a very hot oven, and since the grill can get pretty hot, hotter than an oven, grilling our pizza is the next best thing!

When grilling pizza, you need to have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go.

  • The first thing we’re going to do is grill or cook our dough on the grill for about 3 minutes and then layer all of our ingredients on top.
  • Pop the pizza back onto the grill for about 4 minutes, or until everything is heated through.

The pizza is chewy with a crispy crust and it might just be the best pizza you’ll ever eat!

Crispy and grilled flatbread pizza layered with cream cheese, chicken, mushrooms and onions.

Course: Dinner
Cuisine: American, Italian
Servings: 6 serves
Calories: 308 kcal
  • 1 refrigerated pizza dough
  • 3 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 4 ounces grilled chicken breast, shredded
  • 1 small red onion, sliced
  • 1 cup part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Olive oil for the grill
  1. Preheat the grill on high.
  2. Prepare the dough and shape it on top of a cutting board or a flat baking sheet. Lightly flour the surface so that the dough does not stick.
  3. When the grill is hot and ready, brush the grates with some olive oil.
  4. Slide the pizza dough off the baking sheet and onto the grill.
  5. Close the grill and grill the dough for about 3 minutes.
  6. Check if the dough is browned underneath. If it’s not browned, give it another minute.
  7. Take the dough off the grill with a pair of tongs and put it on top of the cookie sheet or cutting board. Let it cool.
  8. Turn the pizza crust over, browned-side up.
  9. Spread the cream cheese over the entire pizza crust.
  10. Add the red onions, the shredded chicken, and the mushrooms.
  11. Top with the shredded mozzarella cheese.
  12. Put the pizza back on the grill.
  13. Turn the heat down to medium-high, and close the lid.
  14. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and melted.
  15. Pull the pizza off the grill onto a cutting board and let it rest for a minute or so before cutting it.

  1. This looks so good! one question for you though; I have the same exact grill and the grates have warped so badly. Are your’s holding up and do you think it would affect the pizza? Each one is bowed up about a half inch in the middle.

  2. Wow, I never would have thought of trying cream cheese as a pizza topping, but I can see how deliciously it must pair with the spice of a red onion. Can’t wait to try it.

Also, your photography (and that gorgeous wood table on which it happens!) is simply stunning.

  3. Kate… I’m a little bit behind, but what a great job you did!! We’ve been out of town and this was one of the first posts I’m catching up on. Gorgeous photos, as usual. Love the toppings, and well, I won’t admit it anywhere else, but I occasionally use the same dough you did!! 😉

  4. It looks fantastic! I must let my husband know of this recipe. He love pizza and make great pizza too. He posted it on my blog also. Congratulations on top 9!

  5. I have been meaning to try grilling a pizza for a long time. I think that this post finally has me convinced to give it a try. It looks SO good. One of my kidlets is allergic to tomatoes so I am forever looking for alternative “sauces” for pizza. The cream cheese is genius! We will definitely give it a try.

  6. I won’t judge, not at all! I stopped making my own pizza dough when Trader Joe’s fresh pizza dough came into my life. It’s really good! You don’t even need to add water, just let rest on the counter for a half hour, roll out and it’s ready to use.

I’ve never used cream cheese on pizza but it’s a great idea. Love this pizza!

Congrats on Top 9 and hope you feel better soon!

  7. I have been meaning to grill pizza forever; this post is a sign that I must get off my duff and do it. I never thought to put cream cheese on pizza!

  8. This looks wonderful!!! I love the use of cream cheese and grilling the pizza on the bbq grill is brilliant. As always fantastic pictures….I must know what camera you use. I want one and a slice of that pizza. : )

  9. I love Liv Life too! This pizza sounds like the perfect treat to grill on a beautiful summer day! Good thing I’ve got some leftover pizza dough in the fridge because I’m really thinkin’ about making this for dinner tonight =)

  10. Interesting topping the pizza with cream cheese. I’ll bet it’s awesome! I have never grilled a pizza but it looks like it came out great! Time to break out my dough 🙂

  11. Oh I so wish I had a grill…and your pizza to put on that imaginary grill. I don’t think I’ve ever had a cream cheese based pizza but I think that’s about to change real soon!

  12. Kate, this must be one of the fastest and most satisfying dishes ever in the summer – LOL, bet your neighbours were sniffing out that grilled pizza after their steaks. I also saw Kim’s one and now this – I’m going to have to bring out that BBQ! This is fab.

  13. I’ve never grilled pizza either, but I see one in my future. Your pizza looks so good, and your directions are very clear and easy. I love the chicken and red onion combo.

  14. Ok, R2D2 is an awesome grill, but geeeeez; it’s gas. Charcoal, my friend. Charcoal.

You pizza….wow. I’ve yet to try grilling one, but I see it in my near future (very near). I’m thinking of an alfredo sauce instead of cream cheese though. Hmmmm. And probably spinach instead of mushrooms since the fungus makes Hubby and Dudette gag (they have no taste).

Gorgeous pictures. Absolutely gorgeous (but then again, yours always are).

  15. No judging 🙂 I cheat all the time with my pre-made pizza dough. When you’re hungry, you’re hungry! I think using cream cheese might be the coolest thing ever. Genius!

  16. I have been staring at these pizza photos for about 10 minutes straight now. This is brilliant! I always say that cream cheese makes everything better, and I’m sure cream cheese makes this pizza delicious! Yum, gotta try this one to celebrate grilling season.

  17. This looks so good. I’ve been craving homemade pizza all this weekend. I think I’m going to make it tomorrow and grill it! (and I don’t judge, I love TJ’s pizza dough. I buy a bunch at once and throw it in the freezer).

  18. Aaah I want to get a grill again so badly looking at this pizza. Love the idea of adding in cream cheese. Great job Kate!
PS- everytime I look at your pics I see that behind the scenes photo you posted on FB! LOL

  19. This looks delicious! I’ve never put cream cheese on a pizza. And I’ve never tried to grill a pizza. It sounds like fun. And I have to go back to the cream cheese…there wouldn’t be a slice leftover!
