These thin and crispy Apple Chips are made in the microwave with your favorite apple and a few minutes in the kitchen. Who could say no to that? Ladies and gentlemen, meet your new favorite fall snack.

It’s officially apple season! Yay! Whether you’re a Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Pink Lady person, these apple chips are the perfect way to use some of your apple orchard (or produce section) haul.

They are SO easy to make. No dehydrator or oven needed. Just slice your apples real thin (you don’t even have to core or peel them) and pop them in the microwave. The whole process should take about 10 minutes, and BOOM! You’ll have yourself perfectly crunchy, subtly sweet, one-ingredient apple chips.

Enjoy them as is, sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar, or turn them into Caramel Apple Chip Nachos.

Why I Love This Apple Chips Recipe

  • So easy and done within minutes: These apple chips only take 10 minutes to make. If that. So, you really have no excuse not to make them…like now!
  • Crispy: I can’t believe how crispy these guys get in the microwave! It’s like magic. They are so satisfying to crunch into.
  • One ingredient: Can you believe that with just one ingredient, you can have one of the best snacks ever? Literally, all you need is apples here, folks. No sugar. No cinnamon. And they’re SO good!

Ingredient Notes

You’ll only need 1 ingredient to make these apple chips. Any guesses as to what it is? APPLES! If you can get yourself to a cute apple orchard to go picking, do it! Any apple will do, but I have been obsessed with Honeycrisps lately.

How to Make Apple Chips

Here’s a quick overview of how to make apple chips. For more detailed instructions, scroll to the recipe card below.

  • Slice the apples. Cut off the ends of an apple and core it if you’d like. Use a sharp knife or a Mandoline to slice the apple into 1/8-inch rounds.
  • Prepare to microwave. Line a microwave-safe plate with parchment paper and arrange the apple slices in a single layer over the parchment paper.
  • Microwave. Microwave for 4 1/2-5 minutes, flip, and microwave for an additional 30-60 seconds.
  • Rest. Remove the apples from the microwave and allow them to sit for 10 minutes before enjoying.

Tips for Success

  • Thin, even slices: Cut the apples nice and thin. If they are too thick, they won’t get as crispy. It’s also important to maintain an even thickness between slices to ensure even cooking.
  • Single layer: You won’t be able to make all of your apple chips in one batch without overlapping apple slices. You don’t want to do that. They won’t get crispy. So arrange the slices in a single layer and be prepared to make 2 or more batches.
  • Adjust for your microwave: Some microwaves are more powerful than others, so you’ll want to keep an eye on your chips. For medium-large apples, cook the first batch for 4 minutes (3 minutes for smaller apples) and then check them. If the slices are starting to curl up around the edges, flip them and microwave for an additional 30-60 seconds. If they aren’t curling just yet, pop them back in the microwave and cook for an additional minute or so before flipping.

Fun Variations

  • Sweeten things up. If you’d like a slightly sweeter snack, sprinkle a little brown sugar and/or cinnamon over the apple slices before (or after) you microwave them.
  • A savory approach. More of a savory snack person? These apple chips are also amazing with a little salt. Sprinkle the apple slices with salt (maybe some pepper, too) before microwaving.
  • Turn it into nachos. These apple chips are AWESOME as is but I couldn’t help turning them into Caramel Apple Chip Nachos. If you have a little extra time (and a little extra sweet tooth), you have to try it.

Instructions

  • Cut off the ends of an apple, core out the middle (I don’t), and thinly slice into 1/8-inch rounds. This is best done with a Mandoline Slicer, but you can also use a sharp knife.
  • Line a microwave safe plate with parchment paper.
  • Place a few apple slices on parchment paper in one single layer. (You will have to do this in batches.)
  • Microwave for 4.5 to 5 minutes, or until edges of apples start to curl up.
  • Flip each slice and continue to microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until edges are crisp.
  • Remove from microwave and let stand 10 minutes, or until crispy and dry.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

All microwaves are different; start watching the apples at about the 4-minute mark until you can determine the proper time needed to bake the apples in your microwave. If the apples are small, about 2-inches in diameter, decrease the time by 1-minute.

SOOOO fun, Becky! I like the idea of making them in the microwave. Anytime Iโ€™ve ever tried to make them in the oven, they just do not crisp and if they do crisp it usually means they have burnt to a crisp! Pinned!
