This easy Macedonian cocktail recipe is made with red wine and cola. It’s called a Bambus Cocktail and it’s really good!
AN EASY MACEDONIAN COCKTAIL RECIPE
Yes, Pepsi works just as well. Obviously. 😉
Wine connoisseurs and snobs… please don’t walk away! This Bambus Cocktail is really, reaaaaaally good! You’ll see.
SO! Today is Valentine’s Day! HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!
Wanna know what else we celebrate today?! We, as in me and my fellow Macedonians? We celebrate St. Trifun – the Saint and Guardian of wine and wine growers. And wine drinkers! (I hope?)
I told you about this particular day a while back, when I posted my recipe for Sausage Stuffed Eggplant. In honor of St. Trifun, on the 14th of February a celebration takes place in many city squares in Macedonia, including the famous Wine Fair. Before it all begins, priests say a prayer, and the pruning season is symbolically marked with the pruning of the three church wine grapes.
Yeah… we really like our wine.
But, how fitting that both Saints are celebrated on the same day. Wine + Love = Perfect Match!
They say, “In wine, there is the truth”. In Vino Veritas. Sooooo. If you want the truth to come out, have your Valentine drink a few Bambus Drinks!
And, I know! I’ve heard it before; Don’t you dare use red wine in a mixed drink! …but you have to give it a try. It’s super simple and surprisingly delicious. In Macedonia, this is one of the most popular mixed drinks, and since you all LOVE my Macedonian recipes, you know you’re going to want this one, too!
Oh, just give it a try – you can thank me later. 🙂
ENJOY!

I’ve spoken many a truth after a bit of wine (and by bit, I several glassezz). :p
This looks intriguing! Can’t wait to give it a go…
Can you do this with Diet Coke? What about Coke Zero? Hmmmm….
Hi Anne-Marie!! Yes, absolutely! It might alter the taste a bit, but it will still be just as good, I’m sure.
I’ve made this before! It is good. As far as I’ve been told it is a Basque area drink called Kalimotxo. Happy wine time!
Yes, when I lived in Sandander, just west of Paรญs Vasco, it was my favorite. Spelled calimocho in castellano.
In Spain they make their red wine cooler with an inexpensive clear sweetened sparkling mixer called Casera, or any of many brands like it. It tastes similar to diet 7up but only has lemon flavor and not the lime. It’s zero calorie because it’s made with saccharin and works perfectly. The only way I know how to get it in the U.S. is by Amazon UK. It only took a few days to get two 1.5 L bottles to Los Angeles but the shipping is $40. The mixer only costs about $1 each in Spain.
Totally just drank this last night! My hubby does this all of the time to his wine and it is SOOO good! I need to find out how they call it in Italian!
YAY!! I knew we couldn’t be the only ones that drank this! ๐ Is it called “cocovino” in Italian?
Are there Macedonian wines that they use to make this drink? I would think they use wines from their own country. I will look for that.
Ok, I am a wine lover for sure (I do love cocktails as well) but this sounds intriguing! I think that I will give it a try tonight ๐
It needs to be Coke and since I’m not a wine snob, yeah, I’m willing to give this a try.
I’ve had that cocktail before and it IS really good and I am one of those snobs who is not ashamed to admit it. I was told it was a Spanish cocktail and I couldn’t remember the name. So glad to come across your post. Happy Valentine’s Day!
ยกcalimocho!
I am really really intrigued by this recipe. I have never thought of cola and wine together. But heck… why not?!
I have Pepsi and I have red wine, booyah!!!
Awesome!! ๐ ENJOY! Happy Valentine’s Day!!
I really like reading and learning about your culture! Please keep sharing ๐
At first, I didn’t think this sounded good, but I trust you, so I want to try it!
Happy V-Day and St. Trifun Day ๐
