Prepare the mug. Heat some extra water in a kettle (not 1 ½ cups from the ingredients). Add the heated water to the serving cups to warm them up, then discard the water.
Heat the water. Meanwhile, heat 1½ cups of water in a kettle until it simmers. Divide the water between the heated cups.
Add the remaining ingredients. In each mug, add the honey and stir until dissolved. Then add the whiskey and lemon juice, stirring until incorporated.
Finish and serve. Finally, drop in the lemon slices and cinnamon sticks. Serve warm.
Notes
Choose your preferred spirit: You can use whiskey or brandy for this recipe. For the whiskey, you can choose Bourbon, Irish, or Rye. I used Bourbon.
Warm the mug: Heating the mug is the key to a really comforting hot toddy. A cold mug will cool it down.
Make it with tea: For extra flavor, you can use tea as a base instead of plain water. I like using chamomile.
Swap the spice: Instead of cinnamon, you can use star anise.
