My Favorite Homemade Doughnuts For National Doughnut Day

HI GUYS! Happy Friday! HAPPY NATIONAL DOUGHNUT DAAAAAY!

I am a HUGE fan of HOMEMADE doughnuts. Caps Lock needed because, you know, emphasis and such.

I am not someone that would make a trip to a Dunkin Donuts or a Krispy Kreme – I’ve had one bite of a Krispy Kreme doughnut, and, uhm WOW! – but I am that someone who will get up on a Sunday morning to bake OR fry a batch of doughnuts without much thought. I love MY doughnuts (donuts)! Obnoxious? Perhaps. BUT I just really enjoy homemade-anything.

Homemade doughnuts may look like an all day project, but they’re less work than you think, and the result is a truly great, hot, delicious doughnut.

Thus, since today is National Doughnut Day – and there’s a really good story behind it, including the recognition of women’s contribution to World War 1 – I am sharing 8 of my favorite QUICK & EASY doughnuts recipes, including the recipe for these amazing Yogurt Doughnut Holes, which is an updated recipe from the Diethood archives.

Easy Homemade Doughnut Holes Recipe

What Is The Secret Ingredient In This Doughnut Hole Recipe?

These Yogurt Doughnut Holes hail from my beautiful Macedonia.

Funny thing is, IN Macedonia these doughnut holes are called, “American Doughnuts”! And the reason they carry this name is because of the round shape. But when I asked the street vendor in Macedonia about his secret ingredient in these “American Doughnuts”, he said, “YOGURT! What else?!”… which is what Macedonians use for every.thing, from a sunburn to a Pita. American doughnuts, indeed.

Does This Doughnut Recipe Use Quick Bread Dough Or Yeast Bread Dough?

Doughnuts can be made from a quick bread dough or a yeast bread dough. These are definitely a quick bread – ain’t nobody got time for the dough to rise. Also, the yogurt is the secret to keeping them super light and moist, and the addition of 2 tablespoons vanilla is to keep them extra flavorful. If you want, use only 1 tablespoon, but I still think you should use 2.

If you are looking for a flavorful, light and fluffy doughnut to enjoy, consider giving these a try. Hit that save button and make them today! OR this weekend. You will love ’em!!

I have not tested this recipe in the air fryer so I can’t say if it will work or not. I think a muffin tin in the oven would work – pour the batter into muffin liners and bake at 350ËšF – but again, I haven’t tested it so I can’t say for sure.

  3. I can’t believe how good these look, I’ve actually never made doughnuts at home before but I think it’s time to try!

    1. Love this recipe. Donuts taste absolutely amazing. Soft and fluffy on the inside. I didn’t include the vanilla as I didn’t have any but they tasted fine without it. Dusted them with a mix of cinnamon powder and sugar. Kids loved them.

Oh, HUGE congratulations! I can’t wait to see the before and afters. I can already tell that it’s loaded with charm and personality (much like its owner).

The donut holes are amazing. I think yogurt is to us what Windex is to the Greeks. 🙂

  20. Wow – congratulations on the new house!! (Love the brick around the entryway.) I also love these Macedonian doughnuts! If you’re too busy fixing up the new house to enjoy them, please feel free to send ’em my way!

  21. Your donut holes look delicious and using yogurt for flavour, tenderness and liquid sounds like a wonderful idea. I recently researched a similar Romanian donut type dessert called “papanasi” and wonder whether I could use your batter as a base instead. Something to consider.

Good luck on the fixer-up. We bought a similar property 30 yrs ago and are still working on it.
