Apple Crisp – The perfect Apple Crisp full of cinnamon sugar apples and heavy on the crumble.

This time of year I have an abundance of apples, pears, and quince because I grow them in my backyard. For that reason, during the fall I make an apple crisp, or a pear crisp, at least once a week. We love that homey smell of baked apples with cinnamon. If this dish could talk, it would say, “WELCOME HOME”.

In this recipe I have reduced the calories by almost half! The key ingredient here is *substitution*.

Yellow apples in a metal fruit basket on a table

Preheat oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

You will need:

6 cups sliced and peeled Granny Smith apples

1/4 cup water

1/2 cup sugar

2 tbsp. whole wheat flour

1 tbsp. lemon juice

1/4 tsp. cinnamon

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

Combine all ingredients; coat apple slices evenly. Place in an 8-inch square baking pan.

For the topping:

½ cup whole wheat flour

½ cup quick oats

½ cup sugar

3 tbsp. of margarine, melted

¼ tsp. cinnamon

¼ tsp. nutmeg

Stir all ingredients until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over the apples.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until apples are tender and the topping is golden and crisp.

Serve warm.
