Why I Love this Eiskaffee Recipe

  • Authentic. This easy recipe is packed with everything you’d find in an authentic eiskaffee (German coffee over ice cream).
  • Beginner-friendly. There’s no need to be a barista for this drink to look super impressive.
  • Quick. It’s ready in 10-15 minutes, and even quicker if you chill the coffee overnight.
  • Creamy. You don’t need to add any milk because the ice cream melts into the coffee and adds a yummy richness.

Recipe Ingredients

This simple Eiskaffee is packed with milky, creamy flavors from the ice cream and whipped cream. Scroll to the bottom of the post for exact ingredient amounts.

  • Strong brewed coffee – Feel free to use leftover day-old coffee for this.
  • Chocolate ice cream – It can be full-fat, low-fat, or even plant-based.
  • Vanilla ice cream – Use your favorite.
  • Sugar – This is optional. You can use granulated sugar, light brown sugar, or maple syrup.
  • Whipped cream – Cool Whip is a great swap.
  • Caramel sauce – Butterscotch works too.

What Coffee Should I Use for German Iced Coffee?

It should be a strong, cold-brew so that its toasty flavor can still shine through the ice cream and toppings. You can use decaf if you prefer. It doesn’t necessarily have to be espresso. I recommend using your leftover coffee from the day before and popping it into the fridge overnight so you don’t have to brew fresh coffee and wait for it to chill.

How to Make Eiskaffee

Scooping the ice cream is as hard as it gets for this coffee-based drink.

  • Chill the coffee. Pour the coffee into a cup. Place it inside an ice-filled bowl. Let it chill for 15 minutes.
  • Add the ice cream. Scoop the chocolate and vanilla ice cream into a tall glass.
  • Assemble it. Pour the coffee over the ice cream. Add sugar if needed. Top it with whipped cream and add a caramel drizzle. Enjoy!
